Monaco, land of sport
Since the second half of the nineteenth century, the sport was omnipresent in the principality.
The Prince Charles III and HSH the Prince Albert II realized how important the Sport was in term of education and reputation. Thanks to the unconditional help of the government, the sport federations and associations of Monaco developed a unique expertise in the organization of international sport events, placing Monaco in the center of the sport world map.

Long jumping demonstration on the Place du Palais,by the gymnastic Herculis Society.
On the 29th of February 1912,in a boxing stadium of 5000 seats constructed for the occasion,Monaco hosts the fight for the European championship of medium weights between Georges Carpentier(18 years old back then) and the British Jim Sullivan.
Dance demonstration on the shooting range of pigeons,that hosts the 1st Feminine Olympics of Monte-Carlo at the foot of the Casino.

Herculis nearly thirty years old
Since 1987, the best athletes have participated to the Herculis Meeting at the Stade Louis II.
In 2011, Usain Bolt has participated, one year before his second Olympic triple on 100m, 200m and 4×100 m relay. However his time 9.88 seconds was not the record of the length. It was still the property of Asafa Powell and his 9.82 seconds realized in 2008, but Justin Gatlin beat it in 2015, with a very speed race of 9.78 seconds. Voted Best meeting in the world in 2014, essential step of the Diamond league since 2010, Herculis will celebrate its 30 years in 2017

The Games of the Small States of Europe
Since 1985, the Principality of Monaco participate, with eight other nations, to the the Games of the Small States of Europe
Pictured in the beginning of the 80’s and accepted in 1984 during the Los Angeles Olympic games, this international multisport competition, based on Olympism is open to every European country with less than one million inhabitants and affiliated to the Olympic European. The first edition took place in Saint-Marin in 1985. The Monegasques encounter their counterparts from Andorra, Cyprus, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Saint-Marin and since 2009 the Montenegro. The Principality was twice the organisator of the event with the Stade Louis II for principal theater, in 1987 and twenty years later in 2007. The 17th edition will take place from the 29th of May to the 3rd June 2017 in Saint-Marin, the 18th edition will take place in 2019 in Montenegro.

He has participated 5 times to the Winter Olympic Games in Bobsleigh (1988, 1992, 1994,1998,2002), but also to two Dakar Rallys (1985-1986)! Before practicing automobile sports and the « bob », Prince Albert II practiced many sports during his childhood, track & field, football, judo, tennis rowing, sailing, skiing, squash, swimming, modern pentathlon. Member of the IOC since 1985, president of the Monegasque’s federation of swimming (1983), track & field ( 1984) and modern pentathlon (1999), he is also the president of the Monaco Yacht Club (1984) and the Monegasque Olympic Committee (1994). Besides, the sovereign is also member of the Honorary Board of the Paralympic International Committee. Finally, he is the president of the charity « Peace and Sport » that use the sport as a peace tool and social stability in the most disfavored area in the world.
