Stade Louis II

The Stade Louis II is the Monegasques Sports’s Temple since its inauguration in 1985. Built at the heart of Fontvieille, it replaced the former Stade Louis II.Located on the current commercial zone close to the Fontvieille Harbour, the former stadium was inaugurated in 1939 and has been the theatre of the first titles obtained by the football team in the 60’s.

Appropriated to any sports, the Stade Louis II is principally composed of 3 big groups: The football stadium surrounded by the running track, the Gaston-Médecin multisport hall and the nautical center Prince-Albert II. We can also find offices, an underground car-park, a restaurant, an university and even a gas station.

Around the stadium

When we walk in Fontvieille, the Stade Louis-II is never far away, yet it also knows how to make itself discreet, shaded in its urban environment at the french border with Cap D’Ail.

The good sign...

On the 23rd of April 1939,the Prince Louis-II inaugurated the enclosure carrying his name at the foot of the Rocher.

While the AS Monaco Football had been deprived from professional status a couple of years earlier, lack of approved pitch, the footballers could now sustain a couple of ambitions.Meanwhile, its a friendly game between OM and the Luxembourg National team that inaugurated the stadium.Beforehand, all the graduates of the AS Monaco sports paraded on the cinder athletic track, which was tested by a race margin of the encounter and soon judged as one of the best in Europe..The young Hereditary Prince Rainier III gave the kick off of the game that was won by OM (4-0).Frightened by the public screams, a black cat ran several times around the stadium at a big speed,a good sign for the superstitious. It is true that the AS Monaco has won four of its seven titles in that stadium …

The beautiful story

If the Stade Louis-II is the property of the Monégasque State,at the disposition for all the sport people in the Principality, its history is closely linked to the one of the AS Monaco Football.

It is common to see schoolchildren and joggers stand alongside famous sport people at the Stade Louis-II.This enclosure is the only one in the world to marry a sport of high level and grassroots sports,a requirement imposed by the configuration of Monégasque territory.Concessions had to be done, impossible for example to sacrifice the athletic track for the only benefit of football, impossible also to build a second size stadium on such a small territory, but this marriage of convenience has become a philosophy.Nevertheless,it is the exploits of the football players that have made an international reputation of the stadium. The AS Monaco has constructed its history there and this one is displayed on the walls of the corridors leading to the locker rooms.

A brand image

Building a stadium of size was a real challenge for the Principality,in 1939 like in 1985.This capacity to manage the elements to meet a challenge has shown that everything is possible in Monaco.

At the forefront of sport, the Principality needed,in the early 1940s,to dispose of a modern stadium and multi-functional.Ten years after having inaugurated its very first Grand Prix of Monaco, the Prince Louis II presented to his nation and to the world another sportive sized project in an exceptional decoration. It is no accident that the Stade Louis II is visible from the Prince’s Palace.Big passionate of sports, the Prince Rainier III has besides made the same by placing the new building at proximity.SAS the Prince Albert II hasn’t stopped thereafter to reinforce the image of the sportive brand of Monaco. Both have supported, followed and actively promoted the exploits of our football team and of its stadium that is so recognisable. An example with this stamp edited in 1963 at the occasion of the double championship-French Cup of the Red and Whites.
